AMC’s Residency Program

Shaping the Future of Veterinary Medicine

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center is one of the world’s premier postgraduate veterinary teaching institutions. With 140+ veterinarians and 600+ dedicated support staff managing nearly 60,000 cases annually, AMC offers an unparalleled training environment that helps shape the future leaders of veterinary medicine.

Our comprehensive three-year specialty residency program goes beyond preparing you for board certification—it transforms you into a specialist equipped with cutting-edge expertise, advanced clinical skills, and the confidence to tackle the most complex cases in your field.

AMC’s Residency Programs

AMC offers residencies in nine specialties, each designed to provide intensive, hands-on experience with the challenging and diverse cases that comes with being New York City’s go-to veterinary specialty hospital:

Mentorship from Leading Board-Certified Specialists

With a reputation for clinical excellence and groundbreaking research, AMC is home to many outstanding veterinary specialists. At all times, residents work as integral members of our healthcare teams under direct supervision of our Senior Veterinarians, including our 40+ board-certified specialists. In addition, residents benefit from “near-peer” mentorship from more senior residents for additional guidance and support.

Unmatched Opportunities for Research and Innovation

AMC residents don’t just learn—they discover. Our program encourages original research that pushes the boundaries of veterinary medicine. From groundbreaking diagnostic techniques to innovative treatment protocols and case studies, our residents contribute meaningfully to the advancement of animal healthcare.

AMC residents also benefit from unique access to collaborative opportunities thanks to our hospital’s location within Manhattan’s renowned biomedical corridor. New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical College, The Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine are all within walking distance and allow our residents to pursue interdisciplinary and One Health approaches to their chosen specialty.

AMC’s Non-Profit Mission: Where Care Comes First

As part of our non-profit mission, we routinely provide charitable care to patients and clients in need of financial support, including the pets of senior citizens, seeing eye guide dogs, rescue and stray animals, and pet families burdened with the unexpected costs of emergency care. In 2024, we donated more than $3.5 million in care. Not only does this benefit animals in need, but it gives our clinical teams the financial support to attempt to help every animal that comes through our doors.

The Wellbeing of Animals Starts with the Wellbeing of Our Employees

At AMC, we recognize the physical, emotional, and societal challenges of providing veterinary care, and we take proactive steps to make sure our residents have the tools and support they need to grow as clinicians and human beings. AMC is fortunate to have two full-time Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) who specialize in veterinary social work to oversee dedicated Quality of Life programming that promotes employee wellbeing, team building, and decompression outside of clinical hours. Social work services also extend to our clients who benefit from this crucial resource during times of emotional stress. As a pillar of our New York City community, we are proud to embody and support the immense cultural diversity our city has to offer.
