About Pathology at AMC

The Pathology Service at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, through a partnership with IDEXX Laboratories, offers a wide variety of services that aid AMC clinicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes in pets seen by all specialties within the hospital. The Pathology Service includes both anatomic and clinical pathology, with an on-site histology laboratory, clinical laboratory, and postmortem suite, and three on-site board certified veterinary pathologists including one pathologist dual certified in anatomic and clinical pathology.

Anatomic Pathology Services

  • Biopsy sample processing in the on-site histology laboratory and biopsy evaluation by an on-site board certified pathologist
  • Autopsy/necropsy services with on-site gross and histologic postmortem evaluation by a board certified pathologist to document disease processes and contribute to clinical and pathology research – for existing clients only
  • Individual consultation between the pathologists and AMC’s clinicians regarding clinical cases
  • Additional advanced diagnostics offered:
    • Immunohistochemistry
    • PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement (PARR)/clonality testing for lymphoma
    • Mast cell tumor prognostic panel, including mutation analysis via PCR
    • PCR for infectious organisms

Clinical Pathology Services

  • CBC, chemistry, and urinalysis testing with a rapid turnaround time at the on-site clinical laboratory
  • Additional extensive IDEXX laboratory services provided either on-site or at other IDEXX laboratories, including endocrinologic testing, culture/microbiology, PCR testing, and parasitology
  • Cytology sample processing in on-site laboratory with evaluation by an on-site board certified pathologist 6 days a week with predominantly same-day turnaround
  • Individual consultation between the pathologists and AMC’s clinicians regarding clinical cases
  • Additional advanced diagnostics offered:
    • Immunocytochemistry
    • PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement (PARR)/clonality testing for lymphoma
    • Flow cytometry for lymphoma
    • PCR for infectious organisms

  • Rapid turnaround time for diagnostic tests to help guide additional testing and treatment decisions
  • 7-day-a-week clinical laboratory services with close communication between laboratory staff
  • 6-day-a-week cytology service with all samples evaluated by a board certified clinical pathologist, the majority with a same-day turnaround
  • Biopsy samples processed on-site to allow for communication with technicians and samples evaluated by an on-site board certified anatomic pathologist
  • Autopsy/necropsy evaluation available on-site by a board certified anatomic pathologist to provide postmortem follow-up for clinicians and owners regarding disease conditions in pets
  • Individual consultation with in-house pathologists regarding sample submission guidance, biopsy and cytology interpretation, and advice regarding additional diagnostic tests available
