Residency in Neurology
Program Details
The Animal Medical Center’s Neurology residency is a comprehensive training program with direct guidance in the medical and surgical management of neurological diseases. The three-year program is designed to meet the guidelines and requirements of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine General Information Guide. Satisfactory completion of the program should qualify the individual for board examination and certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Neurology.
The Neurology residency is supported by 2 ACVIM board certified neurologists, and other board certified specialists in the following areas: Internal Medicine, Emergency/Critical Care, ACVR, ACVR-Radiation Oncology, Surgery, Clinical Pathology, Oncology, Anatomical Pathology, Ophthalmology, Cardiology and Avian Medicine. The successful applicant will join two third-year neurology residents, 17 rotating interns and 25 residents training in internal medicine, cardiology, oncology, surgery, pathology, and emergency/critical care.
Heavy emphasis is placed on dynamic ward rounds with the experienced veterinary staff to supervise and direct case management. The resident will; however, have ample opportunity for the management of his/her own cases. The resident will be expected to be an active participant in the teaching of interns and residents in other fields of study. Department run journal clubs and resident or staff led case discussions occur weekly.
The AMC neurology residency is demanding and residents will work long hours. With hard work comes the confidence and knowledge to be able to diagnose and treat patients with the most complex neurological and neurosurgical diseases. The neurology residency is a conforming residency. Appointment to the second and third years of the residency is dependent upon successful completion of the subsequent year and approval of the staff.
Additional Information
The Animal Medical Center has state of the art equipment for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of neurological disease. In-house equipment includes: 1.5 Tesla Philips Intera ultra short bore MRI, Linear accelerator with electron and IMRT capabilities, 64 Slice CT scanner, 2D ultrasound machine, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, a CUSA aspirator, C-arm, a Zeiss operating microscope and a complete rehabilitation unit with two underwater treadmills.
The Animal Medical Center owns an apartment building 10 blocks from the AMC to serve the housing needs of our residents. Apartments are available at rental rates below market value.
