Red Eyes in Pets: Causes and Treatments

Since your pet’s eyes are front and center every time you look at them, abnormalities such as red eyes are easy to notice. There are a number of reasons your pet’s eyes may be red. Some are relatively harmless while others are much more serious. On October 14th, 2021, Dr. Alexandra van der Woerdt, Staff Doctor and Head of Ophthalmology at the Animal Medical Center, discussed the various conditions that can lead to red eyes in dogs and cats and how it is properly treated.

Dr. van der Woerdt is board certified by both the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. She came to The AMC in 1994 and currently heads our Ophthalmology Service. Dr. van der Woerdt also serves as the director of Postgraduate Education at the Animal Medical Center. Dr. van der Woerdt has received several honors and awards, including the Clendenin J Ryan Memorial Teaching Award in 2001 and was named Veterinarian of the Year in 2006 by the New York City Veterinary Medical Association. She received the award for outstanding service to veterinary medicine from the New York City Veterinary Medical Association in 2015.
