Being a Licensed Veterinary Technician in AMC’s Dentistry Department

AMC’s Dentistry Service aims to provide the highest quality dental care to our animal patients in New York City and the tri-state area. Dentistry technicians work along our veterinary dentists to provide anesthesia services, dental radiographs, cleanings, and charting to our patients. Our dentists perform comprehensive oral health assessments and treatments (COHAT) and conduct procedures including root canals, surgical extractions, jaw fracture repairs, oral cancer surgery, and much more. Our dental technicians get to work on the forefront of veterinary dentistry and participate in research and education projects. Our dentistry service also provides care to working K9’s, guide dogs, and some exotic species, including a recent jaguar visitor to AMC!

Responsibilities:

  • Provide exceptional and compassionate care for patients from admission through discharge
  • Provide anesthesia and surgical support and post-operative recovery for dentistry patients of all ASA levels
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot surgical, dental, and anesthetic equipment
  • Perform dental prophylaxis, radiographs, and participate in CT scans
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with colleagues
  • Assist with clinic appointments, client communications, and patient discharges
  • Participation in educational and research projects with dentistry focus

Qualifications:

  • Must have NYS Veterinary Technician’s license
  • Must have an interest in veterinary dentistry
  • Experience with dental prophylaxis and radiographs a plus
  • Candidates for this position will ideally have an advanced anesthesia skill set, but we’re willing to train and mentor the right candidate
  • A strong skill set in phlebotomy, catheter placement, and post-operative care is essential
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful working relationships and customer satisfaction with all stakeholders, including department staff, medical staff, support staff, clients, and referring veterinarians
  • Must have ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations
  • Must be able to work successfully as part of a team
  • Ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds

Salary Range

$30.00 – $40.00 per hour
