About the Internal Medicine Discharge Assistant Role

The Internal Medicine Discharge Assistant works directly with the Internal Medicine Department to coordinate and facilitate patient discharges. The assistant would also serve as a utilization management resource for appropriate charge capture/auditing.

Skills

  • Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, post-procedure care, and medications
  • Prior experience as a Veterinary Assistant in a specialty hospital
  • Must have animal handling experience and be able to handle and restrain all species
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, college degree preferred

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Identifies patients for discharge in conjunction with the medical staff
  • Collaborates with IM medical team to proactively develop and implement a safe and appropriate discharge plan
  • Participates in IM team meetings/rounds
  • Confirm pull catheter orders are in the treatment plan
  • Ensures accounts are RTG’d, medication orders are placed, and discharges are in tentative for all patient discharges
  • Communicates and schedules patient discharges directly with owners
  • Ensures discharge time is in the discharge schedule queue
  • Performs client/owner demos as needed
  • Completes follow up client phone calls in a timely manner post-discharge/post-procedure
  • Audits patient charts prior to discharge to ensure appropriate charges have been captured
  • Works with the Clinic Release Assistants to ensure prompt return of pet to owners
  • Other duties as assigned

Salary Range

$19.75 -$25.00
