Leadership Picture

Dear Friends of AMC,

Last year was an incredible year for the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. It was a year of reimagining how we work amidst ongoing construction while continuing to provide unparalleled veterinary care to those who need us most. The year brought its share of challenges and triumphs, and we are proud to share all we’ve accomplished together.

Our Impact Report highlights how AMC leads the way in veterinary medicine through our unwavering commitment to patients, pet parents, and colleagues alike.

AMC’s dedicated staff have made a profound difference to pets and their families, saving and extending the lives of thousands of beloved companion animals while seeing 56,611 patient visits in 2024. We also reinforced our commitment to supporting our employees by fostering their growth and hiring 13 additional veterinarians across various disciplines. Our employees are, in fact, the heart of AMC.

From groundbreaking procedures and advanced technology to best-in-class postgraduate education, AMC continues to be a hub for forward-thinking veterinarians and Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs) passionate about achieving the best health outcomes for animal companions. Last year, we made significant investments in our future, including opening a state-of-the-art surgery suite and upgrading our electronic medical records system and IT infrastructure. April 2025 marked the culmination of 2024’s efforts, with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, Medical-Surgical Unit, and Exotics Ward.

And we’re not stopping there!

As we near the end of our construction journey, the future is bright for AMC. With the completion of our reimagined hospital, AMC will be stronger than ever, ready to train the next generation of veterinary professionals and continue our legacy of excellence in medical outcomes for the communities we serve. AMC will continue to innovate, inspire, and impact communities for generations to come.

Exterior

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

Located in the heart of New York City’s biomedical community, the renovated exterior will display AMC’s role as a preeminent institution for veterinary care and research.

MRI

Construction Ends: September 2024

Located on the 8th floor, AMC’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is human grade using large magnet, radio waves to scan detailed images of an animal’s organs, tissues, and body structures. Used by the Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology Service, the MRI is an integral tool for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning of diseases in animals.

Surgery Operating Rooms

Construction Ends: January 2024

The new, 7,000-square-foot Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care opened in January 2024. This state-of-the-art space features five brand-new operating rooms, a minor procedure room, and a Central Sterile Center. The surgical center also houses human-grade technology, distinguishing it as one of the few hospitals nationwide with such advanced capabilities.

Surgery Prep & Recovery

Construction Ends: January 2024

Housed within the new Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care, the expanded Surgery Prep & Recovery space allows patients to rest and recover post-surgery in brand new, temperature-controlled cages. Separate areas for feline and canine recovery provide a more serene experience that promotes healing.

Conference & Lecture Rooms

Construction Ends: February 2025

A 5,500-square-foot expansion of the fourth floor will be home to the new Education and Conference Center. With nearly twice the current capacity, the Center will provide a flexible space for use by medical and administrative staff, as well as a suitable location for the globally recognized veterinary education and public health education programs that AMC offers through the Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education.

Exotics

Construction Ends: February 2025

Established in 1984, AMC’s Avian and Exotic Pet Service was the first specialty service for exotic pets in NYC and the surrounding metropolitan area. The service provides state-of-the-art medical and surgical care for all different types of pets, including birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, small rodents, and reptiles.

Dog Run

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

As part of the Medical-Surgical Unit, the 5,500-square-foot expansion will include the Acquavella Family Dog Run and Park, which will provide a controlled outdoor environment for canines during their in-patient stay.

Internal Medicine

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

Internal Medicine is a vital specialty for AMC, encompassing an array of treatments and services such as Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, and more. A brand-new Internal Medicine Suite will encompass 1,100-square-feet of the newly renovated and expanded third floor, where patients will be able to check into a designated waiting area.

Ophthalmology

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

The new Ophthalmology Suite will occupy more than 440-square-feet of renovated space and will allow for one of our fastest growing specialties to treat more patients with eye and vision problems.

Medical-Surgical Unit (MSU)

Construction Ends: February 2025

The Medical-Surgical Unit (MSU), also known as the step-down unit, is where animals that are not in critical condition get the in-patient care they need. The MSU will be a part of the third-floor expansion and will increase the current footprint by nearly 40%, allowing AMC to accommodate more patients. Separate areas for feline and canine recovery will provide a more serene experience that promotes healing.

Diagnostic Imaging

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

The Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology Service uses advanced imaging technologies such as radiography (x-ray), ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning of diseases in animals. Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology supports nearly all specialty areas and serves as a critical service to patients and doctors. The renovated second floor will expand the Service’s footprint, allowing the team to function more efficiently and effectively with the increased caseload.

Cardiology

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

AMC’s Cardiology Service diagnoses and treats pets with congenital or acquired heart disease as well as those who have breathing difficulties. Located on the 2nd floor, the Service will expand its footprint to accommodate the increased number of animals needing cardiovascular care.

Emergency Room

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

AMC is the only Level 1 Veterinary Trauma Center in NYC, and one of only five trauma centers in the country that can provide comprehensive care for small animal patients. Within AMC’s Emilia Saint-Amand Krimendahl Trauma Institute, the newly renovated Jeanne Sorensen Siegel Emergency Room will nearly triple its current footprint, adding needed equipment, exam tables, and cages.

Treatment Room

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

As part of the expansion of the Emergency and Critical Care Service, a new treatment room will enable AMC clinicians to respond, treat, and care for the many animals that come through AMC’s doors in emergency cases.

Neurology

Construction Ends: Fall 2025

Pets can suffer from most of the same spinal cord, brain, muscle, and nerve diseases as humans. These illnesses fall under the specialty of veterinary neurology and neurosurgery. AMC is a pioneer in this field as one of only a few veterinary clinics with a dedicated Neurology Service. The new Neurology Suite will be able to accommodate more patients as the practice has grown exponentially over the past several years. The expanded space will allow for an increase in clinical staff and advanced technologies.

Intensive Care Unit

Construction Ends: February 2025

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will triple in size, allowing more critically ill patients to receive specialized medical and nursing care while at AMC. An ICU isolation room will keep animals that may be contagious away from other pets.

Linear Accelerator

Construction Ends: October 2022

In October 2022, AMC’s Radiation Oncology Service reopened after almost one year of construction. The renovated space now houses a state-of-the-art linear accelerator (LINAC), which offers more precise positioning, tumor targeting with millimeter accuracy, reduced anesthesia times, and greater efficiency allowing an increased volume of daily patients.

Lobby

Construction Ends: April 2024

In April 2024, AMC’s Liberman Family Lobby and Reception Center opened, greeting guests with a bright, spacious, and welcoming environment.

Puppy Saved from Freak Accident

Meet Lily. Our puppy was rushed from an emergency animal hospital on Long Island after an extremely traumatic incident that left her with her intestines exposed and damaged. She was clinging to life by the thinnest of threads. Dr. Coffey is a miracle worker! She saved her life. Everyone from the moment we walked in was amazing and throughout Lily’s stay the staff continued to be amazing! Dr. Tasker and the ICU team were phenomenal. I wish I knew everyone’s name to thank them personally. My Aunt has used the AMC for the last gazillion years and would always talk so highly of them and I experienced first hand why that is so. They are the best around! Our family can not thank the AMC and Dr. Coffey and Dr. Tasker enough. We will forever be grateful to you!

Building the Animal Hospital of the Future

Building the Animal Hospital of the Future

The Gift of Love capital campaign is the most significant endeavor in the hospital’s 115-year history. Launched in 2019, this 83,000 square foot expansion and renovation will transform AMC to better serve our animal patients and their families while continuing to expand our landmark campus on the east side of Manhattan.

The Gift of Love campaign transforms the future of AMC.

Our $125 million investment will ensure that AMC can meet the increasing demand for service, bolster new technologies, recruit high-caliber veterinary practitioners, and provide the most advanced training for interns and residents.

Last year, we celebrated the completion of several key projects, including: opening the state-of-the-art Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care, offering unparalleled surgical capabilities from routine to the most complex cases; the debut of AMC at York Avenue, expanding primary care and ophthalmology services; and the opening of our beautifully redesigned AMC lobby, creating a welcoming and modernized space for clients and staff.

These advancements were pivotal in our efforts to cross the finish line in 2025 with the anticipated completion of our new Trauma Center, Conference and Lecture Center, and the Medical-Surgical Unit with the accompanying outdoor Dog Run.

We hope you will consider joining us in building the AMC of the future by making a gift to our Gift of Love campaign. Please contact AMC’s Development office at (212) 329-8660 for more information or make a gift online.

AMC's Caspary Research Institute Holds First Conference with Cornell

Last year, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and Weill Cornell Medicine held their first joint collaborative research symposium at the medical school. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge, foster deeper partnerships, and enhance collaboration across institutions. Speakers from each organization contributed valuable insights, and participants are eager to continue this initiative in the future.

The conference brought together experts in human and veterinary medicine to deepen relationships and explore new avenues of research.

Established in 1954, AMC’s Caspary Research Institute aims to advance veterinary medicine through innovative clinical research. The institute’s initiatives often include collaboration with human health clinicians and researchers studying illness and conditions with similarities to those in animals. Such collaborations improve methods of diagnosis, advance medical and surgical treatments, and help prevent disease in animals and humans.

Grand Opening of the Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care

The Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care is a state-of-the-art facility that triples AMC’s surgical space and adds human-grade technology. The institute is designed to accommodate the most complex surgical cases, including those requiring advanced imaging and minimally invasive techniques.

The new Surgical Institute triples AMC’s surgical space and adds human-grade technology.

In January, AMC opened the Denise and Michael Kellen Institute for Surgical Care as part of the hospital’s $125 million transformational center-wide expansion. Tripling the capacity with more than 7,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space, the new Surgical Institute was designed by architects Perkins & Will and now features five brand-new operating rooms, a minor procedure room, a recovery room separating dogs and cats, and a new Central Sterile Center.

The new Surgical Institute distinguishes AMC as one of the few hospitals nationwide with such advanced capabilities. As the only Level 1 Trauma Center in New York City, AMC is now equipped to handle emergent and intricate cases that may pose challenges elsewhere in terms of care.

There are cases like Ollie, a three-year-old mixed breed who went through unsuccessful surgery elsewhere to correct excessive curvature in one of his front legs. It was only at AMC with a team led by Dr. Pamela Schwartz that Ollie received the care needed to fix his condition. Or Sherlock, a Shih Tzu patient of Dr. Jonathan Ferrari, who had open chest surgery to remove a thymoma (tumor of the thymus gland) and is now cancer-free. The new surgical center will allow AMC to treat and save many more cases like Ollie and Sherlock in the future.

Additionally, AMC partners with the FDNY and NYPD to provide care for their K9 officers, two of whom underwent life saving surgeries at AMC and were present at the Surgical Institute’s “leash” cutting ceremony. Jake, a 7.5-year-old German Shepherd trained in explosive detection, patrol, and tracking, had to undergo a lung lobectomy to remove a ruptured bullae. Shabba, a 6.5-year-old Belgian Malinois also trained in explosive detection, had gastropexy surgery to prevent gastric dilatation-volvulus, a potentially fatal condition.

“Opening our new surgery center is a huge milestone for our entire team and expands the possibilities for the care and treatment we can provide at AMC,” said Pamela Schwartz, DVM, DACVS, CCRP, Department Head of Surgery at AMC. “The excitement about the lives that will be saved, treatments that will be pioneered, and teaching that will occur on this floor is not just palpable, it is invigorating. As we move into this new space, we are so grateful to AMC’s supporters who have made this a reality, and we cannot wait to get to work.”

AMC to the Rescue” Fund Serves as Model for Rescue Animal Care

A publication from AMC’s Dr. Ann Hohenhaus provides a template for veterinary clinics looking to improve access to care for rescue animals.

Dr. Ann Hohenhaus’s publication, “Improving Access to Advanced Veterinary Care for Rescued Cats and Dogs” in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, serves as a model for animal hospitals looking to enhance rescue care. Drawing from the success of the longstanding AMC to the Rescue (AMCTTR) charitable fund, Dr. Hohenhaus outlines a proven approach to expanding access to veterinary services for rescued animals. Her work provides a compelling, evidence-based framework that veterinary institutions can follow to improve outcomes for animals in need, ensuring they receive the advanced medical care they deserve.

AMC's Commitment to Veterinary Technician Growth

Last Year, AMC introduced new pathways for Veterinary Technician advancement, leadership, and growth.

AMC’s support for its veterinary technician workforce is unique in veterinary medicine. In 2021, the hospital appointed its first veterinary technician to the leadership team in the Chief Veterinary Technician role. In 2024, we continued to elevate the Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) role at AMC by launching a new Technician Career Ladder to provide clear and meaningful opportunities for LVTs to grow their clinical and leadership skills and advance their careers. This career advancement structure is designed to match individual passions, skills, and ambitions, offering pathways to develop expertise, take on leadership roles, and make a lasting impact on patients, peers, and the veterinary field. The program offers four areas of growth:

  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS)
  • Management
  • Clinical Educator
  • Advanced Clinical Technician (ACT)

As part of this career growth initiative, AMC’s VTS Support Program offers extensive training for technicians seeking advanced VTS certification. With AMC’s large and varied caseload as NYC’s premier specialty animal hospital, our technicians gain hands-on experience that fuels their clinical passions. Our LVT Clinical Educators guide applicants through the VTS process, while externship opportunities are available for veterinary technology students.
